Channing Tatum to play mermaid in 'Splash' reboot
Channing Tatum has been signed up to play a mermaid in Disney’s forthcoming remake of 80s movie Splash.
In another Hollywood gender swap following the reboot of the recent Ghostbusters, the 21 Jump Street star will be taking up the role which Daryl Hannah was famous for in 1984.
He will star alongside Jillian Bell, who is the love interest in the movie, originally played by Tom Hanks, reports Deadline. The gender reversal idea reportedly came from Bell.
Ron Howard’s original movie told the story of a beautiful mermaid who saves a young boy from drowning, only to return to find him 20 years later.
They fall in love and he is faced with the tough choice of continuing his life on land or living under the sea with her.
Marja-Lewis Ryan is writing the new script, with Splash producer Brian Grazer revealing that a remake was on the way in June during an interview with CNBC. “I’m actually going to do Splash today and I can’t say,” he said when asked who he had cast in Hanks’ role. “There’s a movie star going to be involved and I haven’t announced it. We’re going to do a version of [his original, Wet, told through the mermaid’s perspective] but I can’t tell you the twist.”
Tatum also recently confirmed that he will appear in the sequel to British spy-thriller Kingsman.
The actor, who appeared in Hail, Caesar! earlier this year will take a role alongside Halle Berry, Julianne Moore and Taron Egerton in the follow up to 2015's surprise box-office success Kingsman: The Secret Service
Director Matthew Vaughn recently revealed Kingsman 2's official title and a few plot teasers.
The sequel has been named Kingsman: The Golden Circle. It will see Taron Egerton's Eggsy and Mark Strong's Merlin head to the US to work with the "Statesmen", an American secret spy society whose headquarters are disguised as a whiskey distillery.
