'Stranger Things' creators say series nearly wasn't made after TV execs 'didn't get it'

The creators of new Netflix series Stranger Things have revealed it nearly wasn't made after a number of TV executives rejected their proposals for the show.

Twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer pitched the programme to various networks having made the assumption the streaming service would only commission established names like Jenji Kohan (Orange Is The New Black) and David Fincher (House Of Cards).

The pair approximate they were rejected between 15 and 20 times, while they told Rolling Stone some execs didn't like the idea of having four children as the show's lead characters when the target audience wasn't other children.

"'You either gotta make it into a kids show or make it about this Hopper [detective] character investigating paranormal activity around town'," Matt Duffer said one executive told them. He countered: "Then we lose everything interesting about the show."

He added: "There was a week where we were like, 'This isn't going to work because people don't get it'."

Contacts who understood their ideas for Stranger Things then put them in touch with Netflix, with whom they ended up producing the show.

Bayern will buy Coman permanently from Juventus – Rummenigge

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has made it clear Bayern Munich aim to use their option to sign Kingsley Coman on a permanent basis from Juventus.

The France international, 20, joined Bayern from the Serie A champions on a two-year loan deal last year for an initial fee of €7 million and impressed in his first season at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern have an option to sign Coman permanently for an additional €21m and Rummenigge has made it clear they plan to do just that.

"There is a huge probability that we will exercise our option to buy Kingsley," the Bayern chief told TZ.

Coman regularly featured in 2015-16 due to Arjen Robben's injury problems, with the Dutchman missing the decisive stages of last season.

Bayern were beaten by Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League without the experienced winger and Rummenigge feels things could have panned out differently had Robben been around.

"Robben is a great player. Maybe we would have been able to score that extra goal we needed against Atletico to make the Champions League final had he been there," he added.

"We need Robben. I know that he is hugely unhappy whenever he cannot play due to injury. I wish he enjoys a great season.

A promotional picture for the new series of the rebooted Gilmore Girls sparks fan theories

A promotional picture for the new series of the rebooted Gilmore Girls has generated much interest online over the presence of an apple.

The cult series, which originally ran from 2000 to 2007, was picked up by Netflix back in January for a revival series. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will consist of four 90-minute episodes, which will be available to watch on the streaming service on November 25.

A new promotional post on the show's Instagram page, published yesterday (August 2), has sparked a number of fan theories in the past 24 hours. Depicting a kitchen counter covered in newspapers, a mug with Netflix emblazoned on it sits next to a plate of Pop Tarts, which also plays host to an apple. The caption of the post reads "Pop-Tart appetizers to hold us over 'till the pizza comes. And one apple. "

The post has generated much excitement and discussion online as fans have theorised what the significance of the apple might be. Gilmore Girls, which follows single mother Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory, famously depicted its protagonists' diet as being unhealthy, meaning that the presence of any fruit or vegetable would be a strange addition.

As Entertainment Weekly points out, fans have paired the significance of the apple in the new Instagram post with a moment in an episode from the show's fifth season, 'Blame Booze and Melville'. In the episode, Lorelai posited that she might be pregnant when she found herself eating an apple and enjoying it, telling Rory that this only happened to her once before - the first time she was pregnant. Although Lorelai found she wasn't pregnant by the end of the episode, the apple has since became an important object in the Gilmore Girls universe.

Fans are now speculating that a new Gilmore could be on the way. All will be revealed when the new series premieres on Netflix on November 25.

Coleen Nolan has emotionally answered back after she was accused on Twitter of ‘bullying’ Katie Price

Coleen Nolan has emotionally answered back after she was accused on Twitter of ‘bullying’ Katie Price during yesterday’s Loose Women.

The panellist spoke out on the show today following comments online suggesting she was being ‘harsh’ towards Katie on the previous edition, something that she’s thoroughly denied.

She also admitted that the stories have left her devastated.

‘I’m really upset today,’ a visibly emotional Coleen, 51, explained. ‘I’m really upset and I’m really annoyed actually because it’s so not true.

‘Stop using the bullying word so frivolously. Also I hate bullies, and the one person I’d never dare to bully is Katie Price because she’d eat me alive!

‘I really enjoyed the show yesterday, we did nothing but laugh including Katie.’

Coleen is baffled as to why viewers might have thought she was picking on 38-year-old Katie – who showed off her new breast implants on the show when she modelled a daring swimsuit – but thinks it could have been down to where the former glamour model was sitting.

‘I think what happened is because she was on the end for the first time, it’s a difficult seat to be in if you’re not used to it,’ said Coleen.

‘I think at one point she was really quiet. I don’t know why I got accused of bullying her. I never would, I’d never bully any of you.

‘What people don’t like to believe is, we do all actually get on.’

Coleen also confessed that speculation about any sort of falling out amongst the Loose Women ladies are always upsetting.

Referring to false rumours, the mum-of-three admitted: ‘People go, “Oh don’t worry, it’s chip paper tomorrow”, but it’s not. It really hurts.

‘I’m a sarcastic old boot. But the whole thing about this show is we’re not always going to agree. Anyone who thinks that’s bullying hasn’t been bullied.’

Whereas all is well between the panellists, Coleen thinks fellow Loose Women star Saira Khan IS being bullied in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

Saira has been struggling to get on with some of the housemates and even ended up in tears over it.

‘What’s going on in Celebrity Big Brother with Saira, that’s bullying, that’s pack mentality,’ Coleen said.

There’s been no word from Katie about the drama but we’re glad to hear that all appears well between the ladies.

A sequel to the Harry Potter spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts to be released in 2018

A sequel to the Harry Potter spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them has been given a release date of 2018, according to Warner Bros Pictures.

Although the first Fantastic Beasts movie, starring Eddie Redmayne, is yet to be released, director David Yates has confirmed that he will be returning to direct the sequel, having already read the script written by JK Rowling.

Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara had confirmed that the Fantastic Beasts films would comprise three “megamovies”, focusing on Redmayne’s character Newt Scamander, based in New York about “seven decades” before the story of Harry Potter.

Now an official statement from Warner Bros has said that the sequel “moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances”.

Meanwhile Yates has admitted that Rowling’s script takes the franchise to somewhere completely different. “We’ve seen the script for Part 2, for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction – as you should, you don’t want to repeat yourself. The second movie introduces new characters as she builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further.”

J.K Rowling announced that there will be no more Harry Potter stories at the West End premiere of ‘Harry Potter And The Cursed Child’ last week.

"He goes on a very big journey during these two plays," Rowling told the press. "I think we're done. This is the next generation, you know," Rowling continued, "so, I'm thrilled to see it realised so beautifully, but no, Harry is done now."

Ozzy Osbourne in "intense therapy" for sex addiction

Ozzy Osbourne is currently undergoing "intense therapy" for sex addiction, a statement from a representative for Black Sabbath has revealed.

The statement has been released following intense media speculation over Osbourne's 33-year marriage to Sharon, which came into the spotlight earlier in the year when the pair separated in May. However, Osbourne told ABC's Good Morning America in July that his marriage was "back on track again."

A new statement from Osbourne's rep to People magazine in the US has now shed a light into the reasons behind his marital difficulties, citing a "sex addiction" for the split - rather than the reported affair Osbourne had with his former hair stylist Michelle Pugh.

"[Osbourne] is sorry if Ms. Pugh took their sexual relationship out of context," the statement says. "He would like to apologise to the other women he has been having sexual relationships with. Out of the bad comes good. Since his relationship with Ms. Pugh was exposed, Ozzy has gone into intense therapy.

"Ozzy is mortified at what his behaviour has done to his family. He thanks God that his incredible wife Sharon is at his side to support him."

Sharon Osbourne wed the Black Sabbath frontman in 1982, having three children together.

Their family life later became the focus of MTV reality show The Osbournes, which aired between 2002 and 2005.

Watch Vanilla Ice lose his cool with airport staff after missing his flight

Footage has emerged of Vanilla Ice getting into a row with airport staff after missing a domestic flight in the US.

The rapper, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, was flying out of Atlanta, Georgia for a concert in Nebraska, but found himself stuck at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after just missing his Delta Airlines flight.

In video footage obtained by TMZ, the rapper, became irate after finding out he wouldn't be allowed on the plane. "I'm sitting right here. No one has called me. No one said final call, nothing. I’ve been right there. There’s a fricking line right here. I’m thinking all these people are in line to board, I’m behind them right there,” he ranted.

A man off camera is heard telling Ice that he should have been watching the monitors for boarding information, but the rapper snapped and said, "Hey, I don’t need any information from you, man. Shut your mouth. I don’t need anything from you. Shut up!"

Ice defended himself and later said that he arrived to the airport an hour early and sat near the ticket counter, but when he looked up, the gateway door was closed and he immediately went to speak with a Delta employee.

He also took to Twitter to note the irony of the man who he told to "shut up", writing, "Hahha - funniest thing about this video is the guy that was the smart ass had a TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) shirt on I told him he’s not worthy," referencing the fact he wrote the theme song for 1990 film.

The rapper also apologised adding: “Sorry for offending anybody. Over caffeinated and no sleep. Wrong action but my point was right. now let's keep dancing.”

Listen to Iggy Pop pay tribute to David Bowie with special playlist dedicated to late singer

Iggy Pop paid tribute to David Bowie last night with a special radio show dedicated to the late singer.

The playlist opened with Lodger's 'Boys Keep Swinging' and featured tracks throughout Bowie's career, including 'Diamond Dogs', 'Paper Monsters' and 'Under Pressure'.

"The way I chose them was from memory," Pop said of his song selection. "I took out a piece of paper and a pen and closed my eyes and just remembered what I liked at different times … I'm weighing things that are a little more low on the totem pole, but not obscure."

As he played different songs on his BBC 6 Music show ‘Iggy Confidential’, Iggy discussed his memories of Bowie. Listen to the entire thing here.

Before he played the ‘Station To Station single ‘Wild Is the Wind’, Pop reflected: “This was recorded at Cherokee Studios, which was just a very typical, good old solid rock'n'roll studio owned by some guy who was connected to some guy who always had a mountain of drugs. And there were people with hair too long for their bodies coming and going in weird cars. And strange girlfriends.”

He also told stories about eating hamburgers with Bowie and Frank Zappa, the local atmosphere that helped the process of working on albums like 'Low' and 'The Idiot'.

The episode is part of a larger BBC tribute to Bowie, which included a concert at Royal Albert Hall this weekend that featured performances from John Cale, Amanda Palmer, Marc Almond and more.

A group made up of a 1,000 musicians recently covered David Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’.

Rockin’ 1000, who describe themselves as the world’s biggest rock band, gathered in Orogel Stadium in Cesena, Italy to perform the late musician’s classic track.

Towie’s Megan McKenna and Pete Wicks: A love story in pictures

Megan McKenna and Pete Wicks quickly became the talk of TOWIE when their relationship first graced our screens in March 2016.

They might have seemed an unlikely couple to some – what with feisty Megan having found fame on Ex On The Beach whilst Pete was busy being a pirate in Essex – but there’s no denying they make a pretty hot pair.

Here’s how Pegan became a thing, complete with lots of adorbs pictures to show the blossoming of their romance…
Rumours of Megan and Pete being more than just friends start circulating in March 2016 when preview pictures from the new series of TOWIE are revealed, showing Megan making her debut in the show alongside a certain Mr Wicks.

A source tells The Sun: ‘Pete never falls in love, but is totally bowled over by Megan. He is completely smitten and treats her like a princess.’

Awww. This is soon confirmed when the episode hits screens and Megan gushes about Pete to her pals.

‘I haven’t felt this way, I’m excited and he’s a really good kisser,’ she explains. Ooh!

Pete soon repays the compliment, saying in an interview that he loves Megan’s feistiness.

‘I like women who can stand up for themselves and who have a bit of fire in their belly,’ he reveals.

The couple are so in sync that they even select the same photo when it comes to posting their first couple image on Instagram and they share the same selfie at Easter too.

Pegan continue to chart their flirtation on TOWIE and also get cheeky with each other on social media. In April they bond over their love of dogs, with Pete jokingly asking Megan if his pup Eric can visit her pooch Daisy for a ‘Netflix and chill’ session.

Sounds like it’s getting serious! And indeed it is, as by the end of the series of TOWIE Megan and Pete are pretty much official.

Soon they’re jetting off to Dubai on holiday together and make us all jealous with their loved-up snaps.

Whilst TOWIE is off air, Megan defends the relationship against ‘showmance’ rumours and explains that she’d known Pete for years before they got together.

‘People don’t understand – people watch TOWIE and think: “Oh they’ve just got together because of the show”,’ she admits.

‘Like, no! We actually knew each other, we had a really good friendship before TOWIE…They think it’s just for the cameras, and it is annoying.’

When TOWIE returns in July, Pete and Megan can’t hide their affection for each other in Palma and go crazy for the old PDAs. They also look super cute on a tandem bike – goals.

Oh, and they show they know how to BURN anyone who disses them.

Pokémon GO developers Niantic deny gifting Ohio player a rare Articuno

The developers of Pokémon GO, Niantic, have denied gifting a player in Ohio an Articuno, one of the game's ultra-rare characters.

Articuno has yet to be spotted by players of the popular mobile game, owing to its "legendary bird" status. However, Kaitlyn Covey, a player in Ohio, has claimed that she received the bird as a gift from Niantic.

Writing on Reddit, Covey said: "I have no idea why Niantic decided to give me an Articuno, but I surely do have one! Pretty amazing and I can't wait for Niantic to confirm its legitimacy, but it doesn't really matter... it can't be fake when people are battling it in a gym!

"It is what it is," she continued. "And it was obviously a promo to stir up hype, and it obviously has done that in no time at all!... and it wasn't b/c of a 'late response'... I had emailed them with a question on day 1 of release and they just emailed me back tonight stating they were gifting me with it!... and I'll be darned - it was right there in my Pokédex!"

Her initial claims sparked much cynicism online from fellow players of the game, so Covey then posted a Facebook video allegedly showing the Articuno in an effort to back her claims up.

Niantic have now responded to Covey's claim by saying that it was not a gift from the company. Speaking to Geek.com, a Niantic spokesman said that the Articuno “was not from Niantic. It’s either a spoof, or someone hacked the game." They added that the company is still “looking into it” and there aren’t “clear answers at the moment."

Covey and a friend also held a live Twitch stream in an effort to back up their claims.

In other recent Pokémon GO news, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has banned registered sex offenders from playing the game in the state of New York.

Hayley Williams says "it's amazing to see" the changing perception of female musicians in rock music

Hayley Williams has spoken on the changing perception of female musicians in rock music, saying that "it's amazing to see."

The Paramore frontwoman has become one of the genre's leading figures in the past decade; a presence that has challenged the idea that rock music is still a male-dominated corner of music.

Speaking to The Rock Sound, Williams recognised the clear influence she has had on the genre, especially in terms of paving the way for other female rock musicians to enjoy success.

Asked how it feels to see such musicians as PVRIS' Lynn Gunn and Tonight Alive's Jenna McDougall having the chance to tour together, Williams said it was "an amazing thing to see."

"It's incredible to watch those people really thrive at the same time," Williams said. "There are so many women doing well, making great art and getting recognition, which is fully deserved. I don’t like to think I’m responsible for anything other than the songs that Paramore has written, but if these people have drawn any inspiration or belief from what I’ve done then that’s awesome.

"What is even more amazing is that there’s now going to be another generation of young women who are looking up to people like Lynn and Jenna. When I was starting out in a band I had to take parts of my inspiration from males, because there weren’t enough women to really go around. I had to look at male musicians that I admired or looked up to and go, ‘I think I can do this just as well as they can,’ but I had to find my own way of relating to them.

"That so many young women will now have more immediate relationships available, and that there’s so much more to be inspired by can only be a positive thing.”

Williams also commented on how it feels to be making the same sort of impact that Gwen Stefani and Shirley Manson had on her as a teenager.

"I remember seeing bands like No Doubt and Garbage when I was growing up – bands with strong, confident women at the forefront – and feeling like these were people I had more in common with than anybody I’d ever met in school. I looked at them and went, ‘I can do that, I have that in me.’

"To be able to have that same sort of impact on somebody else is just incredible, especially because there was a time when we almost never saw bands with female vocalists, or even female members at all. It sounds preposterous, but in the grand scheme of things female rock musicians on any sort of wider scale is a very new thing. It’s only in the last few years that people have stopped viewing the notion of a female onstage in a rock band as some sort of novelty.”
